Chipping a tooth can be a scary experience, or if it’s a minor chip, you may not even think twice about it. But the truth is, caring for this type of injury is very important, even if it doesn’t hurt or cause much noticeable damage. Here’s why it’s a good idea to treat a chipped tooth, and a few ways your dentist might choose to fix it.

The Dangers of a Chipped Tooth

Though it may not seem like a huge deal, chips on the teeth are often more than just cosmetic. If the chip is deep enough, you can easily leave the tooth vulnerable to cavities and infections. Even minor chips can cause injuries due to sharp edges, and if left untreated some chips can get worse with time. Thus, it is important to contact your dentist, even if the damage doesn’t seem that bad. Unfortunately, unlike the bones, tooth chips cannot heal and will only get worse if left untreated.

How a Chipped Tooth is Treated

Depending on the severity of the chip, there are several treatments available. Dental bonding is common for chips that are minor and only affect the enamel. This is typically performed using the same materials your dentist uses for tooth-colored fillings, so it not only blends in seamlessly with your tooth, but it also leaves it fully functional, too.  In some cases, your dentist may also be able to file the chipped edge so it’s smooth and repaired without bonding.

For larger chips, you may need a prosthetic like a dental crown, which will restore the appearance and function of the tooth and keep it safe from cavities and infections.

Finally, some chips may require the tooth to be completely extracted and then replaced with a dental implant or bridge. Your dentist can explain your treatment options during your appointment, as they will vary depending on the tooth.

Remember, while chips occasionally happen, even if they’re not bad, it’s still important to have them examined by your dentist. Should you accidentally damage yours, schedule an appointment to have it evaluated and repaired as soon as possible.
